Gay Songs

We sang these at a WILPF program in 2008 to honor Phyllis Lyon, the surviving member of the famous San Francisco couple
who worked for gay rights in the 70s. They were together for forty years, till her partner, Del Martin died, and were the first couple in San Francisco to be legally married. Phyllis was delightful to listen to, and she loved our songs.
(I wrote a little tune for the “verses” of this song, which I could send in written form to anyone who would like to have it.
It was beautifully sung at our program by a well-known Santa Cruz married couple, Gail Groves and Dinah ).

WE’RE LEGAL!
(Tea for Two)

(verse)
Here in Santa Cruz, you can love whom you choose
You don’t have to live a lie;
If we’d beaten Prop 8, we’d be wed by the State–
But the nays were a few votes shy.
Oh, darling, alas, the wicked thing passed
We’re right back to old square one.
We still have to fight for the most basic right–
Just to marry one’s honey-bun!
(refrain)
Imagine me upon your knee
We’re just plain folks, we’re family
We’re married as two souls can be–
We’re LEEEEE-GAL!

No more petitions, no queer demonstrations,
We’re almost accepted by distant relations
We’re just Mom and Mom, it’s a great situation–
We’re LEEEE-GAL!

So now that our problems with marriage are mastered
Our sweet little child can’t be labeled a bastard
Of course, we have in-laws, and that’s a disaster, but
We’re LEEEE-GAL!

WHEN WE GET OLD AND OUR LIMBS AREN’T SO SUPPLE,
WE’LL BE BORED TO DEATH JUST LIKE ANY OLD COUPLE
BUT WE’LL BE TOGETHER,
AND THAT’S WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT.
(verse)
They said that we were only– going through a phase
And what we thought was love was just a temporary craze,
That once we found a man, we’d soon mend our ways. (I don’t THINK so!)
Yet here we are together for the rest of our days ……
(refrain, first verse)

COURTHOUSE OF LOVE
(Chapel of Love)

(This was written by Rachel Harwood, my darling gay daughter, who wrote it for the Arcata WILPF Raging Grannies)

Courthouse of Love

Chorus

Goin’ to the courthouse and we’re gonna get married,
Goin’ to the courthouse and we’re gonna get married,
Gee, I really love you and we’re gonna make it legal
Always been wedded in love.

verse

Freedom’s here,the law is fair (whoa-whoa-whoa)
Birds all sing, as though they care
Today’s the day, we’re an official pair.
We’ll never be outlaws anymore.

Chorus

(spoken- So girlfriends….)
Buy me a blender cause we’re gonna get married
Monogram some silver cause we’re gonna get married
Gee, I really love you and we’re gonna make it legal
Always been wedded in love.
(spoken-now about that monogram, how many initials?)

verse

Bells will ring, across this land (whoa-whoa-whoa),
We’ll be listening, hand in hand,
Proud to say we took a stand and
We’ll never be outlaws any more

Goin’ to the courthouse and we’re gonna get married,
Goin’ to the courthouse and we’re gonna get married,
Gee, I really love you and we’re gonna make it legal
Always been wedded in love.
Always been wedded in love.
